Spider-Man & the Five List From ColomboZone

It was all any geek could get to last night: the new Amazing Spider-Mantrailer, have you seen it yet? Capitalising on all the activity around the Super Bowl, Sony decided not to join the others in releasing new trailers during the game, but just after the game. Like Beyonce, Spidey wanted all the attention for himself.

My first impressions from the preview: OMG Andrew Garfield is so f-cking sexy. As for the nerd vote, which is really what counts here, I’ve hit up half a dozen sites and the general consensus seems to be very, very positive: so far, even though it’s only been 5 years since the last one, they’re into the new Spidey.

Did I mention Andrew Garfield is really hot?

Hot enough, totally, for the Five List. But here’s the thing about that - I love him so much with Emma Stone, I’m not interested in casting him in any personal fantasy.

Anyway, they were all saying that the summer was supposed to be a fight between The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. This trailer has a few people starting the conversation: will Spidey make it a 3 way way brawl?

The new trailer for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ offers a different – but epic – take on the Spider-Man origin story. Watch it here.

Of all the upcoming reboots and remakes on the slate for 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man is probably one of the most debated.
The film is a complete re-imagining of the Spider-Man film universe – one that carries heavy traces of the more modern Spider-Man mythos (as featured in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Mancomic books), rather than the classic Spider-Man comics that were the basis of  Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie trilogy early in the new millennium.

The first Amazing Spider-Man trailer left the fanbase severely divided. Some were intrigued by the seemingly darker and more modern take on NYC teenager Peter Parker’s transformation into an arachnid-powered superhero; others thought that star Andrew Garfield was offering a more “Emo” take on  Peter P., and that the differences in tone, costume, and the details of Spider-Man’s origin story were too divergent from the character’s established cannon.
Well, suffice to say that this new Amazing Spider-Man trailer does enough stuff right to at least see this as a worthy re-visit to some familiar cinematic material. Check it out for yourself, below:

Let’s be clear: This is indeed a different take on Spider-Man. Sure, there are clear shades of influence from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics – including Gwen Stacy, the role of Oscorp, how Peter’s parents’ past is tied with his extraordinary fate as well as that of Dr. Connors. Other elements – like the  contemporary NYC look of  teenage characters like Peter and Gwen, to the darker, grittier Dark Knight-esque aesthetic – are new to the Spidey universe. But in my (sole) opinion, those tweaks and changes – while perhaps initially jarring – ultimately work to make ASM a better movie experience.
This trailer  changes the game. Before, most comic book movie fans would probably agree that the big contest was between Marvel Studios’ The Avengers and Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight Rises; however, it now seems as if Spider-Man is swinging into the ring as a potential contender. Going to be an interesting summer for superhero movie fans.

The Amazing Spider-Man will be in theaters (2D and 3D) on July 3, 2012.

New Release: K'NAAN, 'Is Anybody Out There'

K'NAAN FEAT. NELLY FURTADO
"Is Anybody Out There" (3:58)
Producers: Sham & Motesart
Writers: various
Publishing: various
A&M/Octone Records

The first single from Somalian hip-hop artist K'NAAN'a new EP "More Beautiful Than Silence" picks up right where uplifting cuts like "Wavin' Flag" left off, this time with pop chameleon Nelly Furtado handling the chorus. Next to Furtado's breezy hook, which recalls her pre-Timbaland material like "Turn Off The Light," K'NAAN's uplifting subject matter sounds very much at home. Sometimes his musings are clever ("You can point a finger, but there's three pointing back"), but other times, his "troubled youth" anecdotes ("Adam was lonely, drugs were the only") come off a little too reminiscent of P.O.D.'s "Youth of a Nation." Even if K'NAAN is turning into an artist that a high school guidance counselor would love, his often eclectic, always earnest brand of pretense-free rap-pop is difficult to dislike. If his latest single is any indication, "More Beautiful Than Silence" is poised to keep "Troubadour" enthusiasts coming back for more.

Adobe gives Photoshop CS6 a new graphics-chip boost

Adobe uses a computer's GPU to accelerate the Liquify plug-in. (Click to enlarge.)

Adobe Systems has released a second advance look at Photoshop CS6 that shows new work to give a hardware boost to the image-editing software.
The graphics processing unit (GPU) speeds the Liquify tool, which lets people smear images in a finger-painting way, according to a Zorana Gee, a Photoshop product manager. She demonstrated the change in a YouTube video, the second in what looks to be a series of previews of the software. An earlier Photoshop CS6 preview showed new raw image editing tools adopted from the Lightroom 4 beta, a darker user interface, and improvements to brush size selection. Expect Adobe to add more previews but to withhold some goodies for the official launch sometime later in the first half of 2012.
When firing up the Liquify plug-in with the current Photoshop CS5.x to edit a 100MB image, the image arrives only gradually, broken up into multiple tiles. "And further, if I want to increase my brush size beyond 1,500 pixels, I can't," Gee said. Worse, when she tries to use the brush, there's a big lag between her stroke and the on-screen result.

In CS6, she said, the image opens immediately in the Liquify filter, the brush size goes beyond 14,000 pixels, and interactive performance is snappy.
"You can see real-time editing--no lag," Gee said. "Your edits immediately follow your cursor."
It's not clear if the GPU help applies to other new tools. Adobe has added other GPU acceleration to assorted features in earlier versions of Photoshop.
Another feature is background save, which lets you do other work while you save a large file, though apparently you can't work on the file itself as it saves.
Photoshop is one of the most popular programs from the San Jose, Calif.-based company, but Adobe is in the midst of a transition to a $600-per-year subscription called the Creative Cloud that combines Photoshop with all the other Creative Suite programs, the Touch mobile apps, and online services for publishing and connecting socially to other subscribers. Cheaper subscriptions and traditional perpetual licenses also will be available for those who want individual packages.
Adobe had wanted to add the GPU acceleration and background save features to Photoshop for some time, but programmers had been derailed by the need to move from Apple's older Carbon user interface to its newer Cocoa interface after Apple canceled its plans for 64-bit Carbon support, said John Nack, an Adobe principal product manager.
"Both of these features have been in the team's sights for a long time, but they kept getting derailed by things like the Carbon-to-Cocoa conversion effort. Nice to have that behind us," Nack said in a blog post.

Madonna, 'Give Me All Your Luvin''

MADONNA FEAT. NICKI MINAJ AND M.I.A.
"Give Me All Your Luvin'" (3:22)
Producers: Madonna, Martin Solveig
Writers: various
Publishers: Webo Girl Publishing Inc. (ASCAP), EMI Blackwood Music, Inc. (BMI), Money Mack Music/Harajuku Barbie Music adm. by Songs of Universal, Inc. (BMI), Universal Music-Z Tunes LLC (ASCAP)
Interscope Records
Rating: 60/100

When Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'" fell victim to a widely publicized leak in November, this reviewer's main reaction was, "that's it?" Sure, the track had many elements of the song types currently dominating the radio -- peppy production, a cheerleader chant straight out of "Hollaback Girl," an easy-to-remember chorus -- but it felt like something was missing. When Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. were confirmed to appear on the finalized track, the assumed missing piece was "guest raps," but now that "Give Me All Your Luvin'" is out in full, very little has changed. What the raps add, if anything, is a temporary distraction from the tedious proceedings: Minaj spits her guest verse so quickly, the listener barely has time to register lines like "I'm Roman / I'm a barbarian / I'm Conan" before she's off the track. Ditto M.I.A., who appears just long enough to drop a few scientific adjectives ("supersonic / bionic / uranium") before effectively dropping the mic with, "I'ma say this once -- yeah, I don't give a shit." It amounts to a subpar effort from all parties, particularly Madonna, who hasn't sounded this robotic since the more tweaked-out moments on her last album, "Hard Candy." Here's hoping her other collaborations with Solveig, as well as longtime collaborator William Orbit, produce better dance-pop results when new album "M.D.N.A." comes out March 26.
