Those on the lookout for some serious shopping will definitely enjoy the groovy, vibrant Colombo. Indisputably the best shopping in Sri Lanka, Colombo offers everything from bustling outdoor markets to chic shopping malls and from colourful street vendors to specialty boutiques. But that’s not just it- you will find the prices almost as good as the diversity of items on sale.

ODEL

Hunting for some bargains? Colombo is literally a bargain hunter’s haven; they can be found everywhere, but your best bet is to go straight in to the plethora of outdoor markets dotted around. A perfect spot is the Pettah Bazaar as well as across the Fort Railway Station. The cobble-stoned streets are fringed with shops and stalls that sell everything from fabrics, clothing and shoes to electronics, books and household items at really great prices. The goods are pretty much set aside in categories. For instance, you will find mirrors and glass showcased around Prince Street, music-related items collected around Malwatte Avenue and the household goods around Keyzer Street. Most shops normally close on Sundays in Pettah, but the Main Street doubles up as an open air bazaar. Another such lively bazaar opens well on Olcott Street, close to Fort Railway Station.

If you are looking for handicrafts and collectibles, there is no better place than the Laksala Emporium. The goods here are top-notch but slightly expensive. Located at York Street, you can drop at the shop anytime between 9 am and 5 pm on weekdays and pick up lovely handcrafted lacquerware and painted wooden masks, batiks and handloom cloth.

Pettah

If you want more options, you can check the shops around Cinnamon Gardens or Barefoot Gallery at Colombo 3 which has quality, charming and tasteful handicrafts, linens and handlooms at higher rates. If you’re hunting for antiques and top-quality home furnishings, check out Paradise Road, a posh boutique which doubles as a restaurant and has some branches too.

The quality of some items at street vendors and outdoor markets can be a bit a doubtful, so be sure to inspect any item closely before paying. If money isn’t an issue and you are only looking for quality, then you are better off shopping in the myriad of luxury department stores and stylish boutiques gracing Colombo. Odel is, of course, the one stop shop for everything you need. Up scale shoppers will love it here and it is by far the trendiest department store in Colombo. It is evident in their extensive collection of fashion wear to formal wear that Odel is fast becoming Sri Lanka’s premier lifestyle product destination. Locally produced clothing here is generally cheap and of excellent quality too.

Liberty Plaza

Cotton Collection, House of Fashion, RomaFour and Beverly Street are some other similar excellent spots to pick up some clothes that are comfy and chic. Pre teenage clothing can be found at Kids at Kynsey Road Colombo 7 and Toys For U is a kiddie’s paradise of toys in De Mel Mawatta.

Large scale shopping can be done at Majestic City in Bambalpitiya. Most shoppers seek refuge from the heat in this spacious air-conditioned shopping mall. With a cinema at the top floor, a food court in the basement and a variety of interesting shops in between, make Majestic City a well liked shopping location.

Laksala

Crescat Boulevard is another fine up market shopping mall in Colombo. The retail shops here are high-end and offer some of the best choices in the market. With its exceptional location adjacent to the contemporary Cinnamon Grand and in the heart of Colombo and one of the best places in Colombo to pick up designer brands, Crescat is an exciting place to shop.

Barefoot

Liberty Plaza is another mall that is worth mentioning. A multi-storied shopping complex, Liberty Plaza attracts huge crowds of ardent shoppers because of their varied range of merchandise that usually comes with an affordable price tag. From music to jewelry, Liberty Plaza is a satisfying shopping location with a small number of dining options available too.

Facebook Shutting down on March 15th Spam Message

Its quite annoying to see how annoying some facebookers can be, Recently I was bombarded with spam messages (Intended and not auto posted) asking me to repost it on 15 other friends wall or inbox them so that my Facebook account is not deleted. 

I am sure many of you have already received such sick posts, Lets uncover the truth behind that message.

The spam post that people are posting on their friend’s wall and inboxes reads the following:

Hi everyone this is a message from the creator of facebook and it tells you a little bit about whatis going to happen to facebook on the 15th of March. Please don’t send this back to the person you recieved it from. Dear facebook members, Facebook is suppose to be closing down March15, it is recently becoming very overpopulated. There have been many members complainingthat facebook is becoming very slow. Records show thatthere are many active facebookmembers and, and on the other side, many new members. We will be sending this messagearound to see if members are active or not. If you are active please send to 15other users usingcopy + paste to show that you are still active. *who do not sendthis message within 2 weeks willbe deleted without hesitation to make more space. Send this message to all of your friends toshow that you are still active and you will not be deleted.

The above message is portrayed to be from Mark Zuckerberg (-_-) and asks you to post the message on your friend’s wall to check if you are an active facebooker, They say the reason for such a check being that Facebook is getting overpopulated and they are removing inactive members. LOL

Things That Prove This Is a Spam.

The above quoted message looks like a scrap written by a kid and doesn’t even come close to an Official Message from the Facebook HQ and moreover, How are they supposed to know if you have posted it to 15 people ?

Also the second line reads that Facebook is going to shut down on 15th March, If its going to shut down anyways why are we bothered to show them we are active member by sharing these spams? These are signs that tell these kind of messages are spams.

The Truth about 15th March 2012 and Facebook.

The rumor has been spreading since the 2011 that Facebook is going to shut down on 15th March and many blogs also reposting the same without proper knowledge about the same. Facebook has officially said that they are not closing down and infact they are working on improving Facebook.

On hearing this rumor, The Facebook team tweeted the following on their Twitter Account which proves that the 15th march 2012 facebook shutdown is a rumor and spam.

We didn’t get the memo about shutting down, so we’ll keep working away. We aren’t going anywhere; we’re just getting started.

FBI will shutdown the Internet on March 8

The Internet could go dark for millions of users as early as March 8 because of a virus that has corrupted computers in more than 100 countries. Last year, authorities in Estonia apprehended six men believed responsible for creating a malicious computer script called the DNSChanger Trojan. Once set loose on the Web, the worm corrupted computers in upwards of 100 countries, including an estimated 500,000 in America alone.

The primary impact of this infection is that it caused web surfers to be sent to fraudulent websites by changing what is called the DNS settings on compromised computers.The Domain Name System (DNS) is the backbone of the Internet's address scheme and DNS servers are special computers around the world that act as Internet traffic cops providing directions to websites that you wish to visit.

Though the FBI has shut down the DNSChanger network and put up surrogate servers, they warned the solution was only temporary - and the court-ordered deadline is March 8. When the FBI pinched this group, if they had shut down the rogue DNS servers, everyone that was infected would have instantly been cut off from the Internet so the FBI chose a different strategy.They decided to get a court order allowing them to replace the rogue DNS servers with legitimate stand-ins so that all the infected computers wouldn't get cut off without warning giving them time to get the word out.

Both Windows and MacOS users are at risk for this infection because it exploits your browser, not your operating system. If you are somewhat technical, you can do a self-check of your computer to make sure you're not infected by comparing your computer's DNS setting to the list of rogue DNS servers:

At present, Facebook has nearly / over 600 million users and unfortunately like many other social networks, facebook also has been infected with FAKE PROFILES. Some use fake profiles to promote their businesses [events, pages, groups etc] on facebook, while some mentally ill persons use fake profiles to harm others' privacy and even to put innocent lives in danger. We do not recommend both types of fake profiles and here we have listed a few tips to recognize a facebook fake profile. If you notice multiple points that are listed below in a friend requested profile or in a friend request received profile there is a 99% possibility for it to be a Fake Profile. Check out the facts that we have listed below & make sure you only add a Real Profile as a friend on facebook.

Why would someone create Fake Profiles?
1. Testing Relationships : Lovers testing and teasing each other by fake flirts & messages.
2. Promoting Business : Sharing on fake profiles and force businesses to grow.

4. Psychos : Stupid pointless people who like to fool around.

1. Profile Picture : If the profile picture is a photo of a super professional model,celebrity, or something SEXY and only having one photo in the profile picture album, always think thrice before adding or requesting them to be friends. And also if the profile picture is a photo of a ladies footwear, never add that person if you don't have any clue about whom he/she is. There is a huge trend building on social networks with profiles who wish to be kind of a servant for girls and they use photos of high heels in their profile picture. These people are very dangerous & mentally ill.

2. Too Many Male Friends : Usually guys send requests to girls if their profile picture attracts them & adds most of the girls from whom they receive requests. Usually girls don't add every request they receive and they never request unknown guys [I'm talking about good girls here ;) ]. But for fake profiles gender issues does not matter. They add everyone who request them and they send requests as much as possible. So there is a huge possibility to see many male friends [Hundreds to Thousands] in a facebook Fake Profile.

3. Photo Albums : Fake profile holders never think about the privacy of the profile. So most of the time all the albums are visible to everyone. When you click on the "Photos" of a non friend profile and if you can't see photo albums there that gives you a hint that the owner cares about his/her privacy and it gives a clue that it can be a real profile. And on the tagged photo list , if you are only viewing application photos and cartoon/celebrity photos, that means none of the friends have tagged a photo of the owner and it also gives a hint that such person does not exist.

4. Full Filled Profile : This is one of the most promising hints!!! If the profile information is fully filled that means there is a huge possibility for it to be a real person. Fake Profile holders hardly update their profile information. Don't expect mobile numbers and e-mail addresses there, but you can check for interests, quotes and other available information to make sure that the profile is active on facebook and it has decent likes and interests. If you see suspicious pages and groups in likes & interests list, Think Thrice !!!

5. Family Requests : If you are getting family requests from unknown friends who are in your profile, don't ever confirm them. Fake Profile holders use this trick to show others that the profile is a real one. Once they got a few real people as siblings and there after when the profile sends a request to someone it makes the receiver to think that "This profile has some siblings and they seem to be real, so this profile needs to be a real one, ok, Im confirming your request"

6. Status Update Comments : This is another promising hint. Some Fake Profile holders try to show that they are real by updating their status. Usually guys comment when a girl updates her status and also a few of her female friends comment in it (Sign of a real profile). But in this case only males comment & as the replies from the profile holder is numerically low, there wont be many comments by others too. Keep this tip in your mind and be sure to check status updates if you got a request from any unknown person. ;)

7. Activity Feeds : If you see this kind of activity feeds on a facebook profile wall that means it's FAKE & made to promote events, pages, applications or groups. Adding a friend who promotes applications will put your profile in RISK. Clicking on spam / phishing links will risk your privacy and will trouble your friends too. There is a chance of losing your account if you enter your password in any phishing web sites.

8. Friend Activity Feeds : This kind of activity feed also warns us to think twice before adding or requesting it to be a friend of yours. Usually a decent guy/girl won't accept all the requests he/she receives. But there are people who accepts each and every request they receive [at their own risk]. So if you have any mutual friends with these types of profiles better to ask one of them before confirming if you have received a request from a profile whose wall is filled with these kind of activity feeds. 

We are not saying you not to add strangers. People love to make friends and social network is all about connecting people. But you must add good friends. You must not put your friends and your family members lives in danger by adding psychos in to your account. Specially if you are a girl, think thrice before adding unknown people. Beyond Facebook: The Rise Of Interest-Based Social Networks

With the pending public offering of Facebook anticipated to be the largest tech IPO in history, it’s an interesting time to think about where we go from here. Some say “social is done,” Facebook is all the social media anyone would ever want or need. Unquestionably, as it nears one billion accounts, in the solar system of social media, Facebook is the Sun — the gravitational center around which everything social revolves.

But while some may pronounce that Facebook is all the social we’d ever need, users clearly haven’t gotten the memo. Instead, users are rapidly adopting new interest-based social networks such asPinterest, Instagram, Thumb, Foodspotting, and even the very new Fitocracy. The numbers tell the tale around users’ appetites for these new interest-based social networks. Pinterest, the increasingly popular virtual pinboard, crossed 10M monthly unique users in the US in January 2012, achieving 8 digits worth of monthly uniques faster than any site ever, comScore says. According to Silicon Valley uber-investor Ron Conway, Pinterest is growing like Facebook 5 years ago.

On Thumb, a community for instant opinions, user engagement has mushroomed in its short history. Users asking questions can expect to receive over 60 answers from other users within 5 minutes. As a result of this near instantaneous community engagement, Thumb’s average usage is currently second only to Facebook’s, and is far ahead of mainstream services including Pinterest and Tumblr, though on a smaller base.

What accounts for the fast growth of these interest-based social networks, and what does it mean for Facebook’s future?

Interest-based social networks have a markedly different focus and approach than Facebook. The Pinterest, Thumb and Foodspottings of the world enable users to focus and organize around their interests first, whereas Facebook focuses on a user’s personal relationships. Facebook offers us a social utility to deepen social connectivity with our existing social graphs, while these new interest-based social networks enable users to express their interests in new, engaging ways and offer authentic, high value connectivity with new people we don’t already know. The different approaches of these interest-based services are distinct from Facebook, and they are powering the massive growth and engagement we are seeing in these new services.

On Pinterest, I can curate and express my interests in Crossfit, cars and architecture, giving me the ability to create a strongly personal identity that draws me into new social relationships with people on the basis of my interests. Similarly on Foodspotting, I can easily express my love for ramen, which in turn connects me with other ramen fans who aren’t in my current social graph.

So if interest-based social networks focus first on an individual’s interest graph and Facebook centers on an individual’s social graph, which service will be the winner?

Both.

Humans are inherently social creatures, and we define ourselves both by the people we know and our interests. We make decisions about where to eat, what to buy, where to visit, etc. based on a complex matrix of social relationships, past experiences, location, long standing interests and future goals. Today’s platforms approach our lives from different angles but both are integral to how we define ourselves and interact with the world around us.

There are opportunities to establish differentiated, sustainable social media brands with large, passionate audiences. Much like the modern day media disrupters (e.g. ESPN or HBO or CNN), these services can establish new social media networks that are differentiated and unique, protecting them from the inevitable concern that they get squashed by Facebook. The traditional “Big 3 networks” (NBC, ABC, and CBS) used to be the only properties that really mattered, similar to how some view Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn in today’s social media landscape. Emerging networks will be the new media brands and properties that augment social networking and media.

At the same time, the rise of these new interest based social networks does not really threaten Facebook, in fact, they are more likely to benefit Facebook. Specifically, Facebook has evolved itself brilliantly into not only an end user application drawing near to 1 billion accounts but also a robust, powerful platform other apps can leverage in order to drive more users to their services. Pinterest, Instagram, Fab, and many others have adopted Facebook’s Timeline API for precisely the reason of wanting to raise awareness of their services and drive more users to their sites. As these new services grow, more content gets pumped back to Facebook, Facebook’s platform gets more robust. Wash, rinse, repeat… Facebook’s positive feedback loop gains more momentum, and becomes more powerful.

In the words of Marc Andreessen, “Software is eating the world”, and in the world of social media, there is, for now, plenty of world to go around.
