Watch out for ‘Hunger Games’ malware

A lot of us are excited about “The Hunger Games,” but don’t let your excitement lead you to an online trap for malware.

As with any big event and huge public interest, “The Hunger Games” is provoking a lot of online searches for information related to the movie.

Norton, maker of security software, said Friday it has found “a variety of searches related to the movies and books are turning up malicious results.”

Although difficult for the average user to distinguish, these ‘poisoned’ links can instantly infect your computer with viruses, keylogging programs (which allow criminals to monitor your typing) and other software that can wreak havoc on your smartphone, computer or tablet. Ensuing problems can make you feel as though you’re battling against your devices.

So far, Norton says it is seeing “malicious results” tied the film’s star, Jennifer Lawrence, author Suzanne Collins, and the trilogy of books she wrote.

A recent security report warned of malware networks (“malnets”) “lurking within Google and other search engines, driving unsuspecting Web surfers to sites where they might share their personal or financial information to unintended parties,” wrote msnbc.com’s Athima Chansanchai, in sharing the findings from Blue Coat Systems 2012 Security Report.

“Choose your allies carefully – Katniss Everdeen wouldn’t trust the people trying to defeat her, and neither should you,” said Norton. “Cybercriminals promise sensational content, such as leaked videos, to lure you into clicking on their poisoned links. Better to get your information from a website you trust.”

The best thing you can do is use security software, whether it’s from Norton or another reputable firm, to alert you to any possibly dangerous websites you might stumble upon, as well as make sure you have the latest version of your Web browser’s software.

17-Year-Old KPN Hacker Arrested in Netherlands

A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Barendrecht by the Dutch High Tech Crime Team. He’s suspected of being the one responsible for hacking into the systems of KPN at the beginning of 2012.

According to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (Openbaar Ministerie), the suspect was arrested at his home, an encrypted desktop computer, two laptops and numerous external data storage drives being seized by the investigators.

Authorities determined that KPN’s computer systems were damaged after the hacker managed to bypass the security measures and place malicious software on the company’s servers.

The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) informed that the incident did not pose a threat to national security, but the Internet service provider (ISP) was forced to clean up and reinstall a large number of systems. Furthermore, the company even had to temporarily suspend its email services.

For the time being only a limited amount of information has been made public because the investigation is ongoing, but as it turns out, the same hacker is suspected of breaching websites belonging to the Tokohu University in Japan, the University of Trondheim in Norway and the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

It has also been revealed that the teenage suspect used online monikers such as xS, Yoshioka and Yui. During the investigation, Dutch authorities collaborated closely with the Cyber Terror Response Center of the Korean National Police and the Australian Federal Police.

A 16-year-old Australian hacker who was in contact with the suspect was also arrested last week.

A court from Rotterdam dictated that the suspect will remain in custody for a period of two weeks, during which he will be assisted by a lawyer and receive visits from representatives of the Council for the Protection of the Child (Raad voor de Kinderbescherming).

Talking Tom Cat on Android is a fairly basic application which seeks to cause the same degree of mirth by taking a recording of your voice and applying that all-important high-pitched filter.

Using the app is easy. You merely talk into your phone’s mic and Tom – the on-screen moggy – cups his ear to show that he’s listening.

When you’re finished he recites your mutterings in his own adorable voice, even going as far as to mouth the words as he speaks.

You can record up to 30 seconds of speech and even upload the results to YouTube for posterity or email them to a friend.

Superficial touches such as interaction with the touch screen are also present.

Tapping Tom repeatedly on the head will cause him to fall over as if he’s been punched, whilst rubbing his tummy will keep him contented, resulting in a purring sound. Other parts of his body are also interactive, such as his feet and tail.

You can also tap a glass at his feet to instigate an animated sequence where the receptacle is filled with fresh milk which Tom then gleefully consumes.

That’s all there really is to it, but to be honest Talking Tom Cat’s voice recording feature is enough to warrant a download on its own.

While Talking Tom Cat is a pretty juvenile application it has a tremendous amount of charm – just put this in the hands of a child and you’ll see how magical it is.

It also has more amusing uses such as candidly recording people in conversation at work and then playing back their speech – something that is likely to cause plenty of chortling – not to mention aggravation – in offices up and down the country.

Talking Tom Cat is offered for free but is supported by adverts which do tend to sully the otherwise excellent presentation of the app.

It would also have been nice to see a few more voice types thrown in for good measure; there are other voice-changing apps available for smartphones so it’s clearly possible.

However it’s hard to grumble when there’s so much fun on offer. Talking Tom Cat is a throwaway download which won’t enrich your professional life or make your day-to-day business any easier.

However it will bring a smile to your face whenever you boot it up, and that has to count for something.

To install:
A. Go to the directory and run the Medicine exe-file with a "cure." After that, no serial numbers and other things would not ask. At the time of proposal to register click on register later.
