Hackers use Facebook to spread mobile malware

Social media accessed via mobile became a hot spot for malware attacks in Q1, according to web and mobile security firm AVG.

Unsurprisingly hackers focused their viral assault on Android, encouraged by the open nature of the platform and the huge number of variations implemented by different OEMs and operators.

Android has been plagued by malware scares recently, causing Google to remove over 100 contagious apps from Google Play.

Yuval Ben-Itzhak, CTO, AVG, said: “Cyber criminals are finding it very convenient to distribute their malware straight to a mobile device via these networks. The growth of the Android platform has been phenomenal, which has not gone unnoticed with cyber criminals who have discovered it to be a lucrative target for their malware.”

Twitter has over 140 million users and Facebook has over 900 million, and hackers are targeting the networks because of the opportunity to access the vast amount of data and data stored on them.

15 Years Old Student Arrested For Hacking into 259 Firms across the span of 3 months

Austrian police have arrested a 15-year-old student suspected of hacking into 259 companies across the span of three months. In other words, during the last quarter he successfully attacked an average of three websites per day. Experts are saying that scanned the Internet for vulnerabilities and bugs in websites and databases that he could then exploit. According to a report of Zdnet - The boy allegedly stole data and published it publicly after breaching the security infrastructures of 259 firms. He also defaced many company websites and boasted about his accomplishments on Twitter, where he also posted links to his data dumps. The firms were attacked between January 2012 and March 2012, and they were not limited to just Austria. He didn’t seem to target specific types of industries: everything from sports companies, to tourism services, to adult entertainment, to search services were attacked.
The teenager used various hacking tools widely available on the Internet, including software that helped him remain anonymous. Now and then, he left messages in the systems he hacked, or simply signed them with the hacker name ACK!3STX. Eventually, however, ACK!3STX’s anonymizing software failed him and his IP address was visible to BMI’s C4 (Cyber Crime Competence Centre) unit. C4 had been receiving multiple complaints from companies since the beginning of the year, so they started monitoring the hacker. At the end of last month, the unit traced his location to a residence in Lower Austria, and then obtained a search warrant.  What ever the investigation is still ongoing. Europol is trying to quantify his attacks both at home and abroad.

Jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is seeing some progress

Owners of the new iPad with iOS 5.1 will be pleased to learn that according to famed iOS hacker, pod2g, a jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is on its way. No word on when the jailbreak will be released, but just don’t expect it to surface in the next few days. According to the hacker’s tweet, it seems that he and his group of hackers have managed to weed out all the exploits that are needed in order for them to come up with a jailbreak solution, and that right now he is attempting to bypass the ASLR at the bootup.

While this by no means indicates that a jailbreak will be ready for download soon, it certainly indicates that pod2g and his team are on the right track. Given his success with the iPhone 4S jailbreak, we guess it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if he managed to jailbreak iOS 5.1 along with Apple’s third-gen iPad as well. In any case we’ll most definitely be keeping our eyes peeled, so check back with us at a later date for updates.

FBI track Anonymous hacker using his girlfriend's boobs

 
The FBI swooped on Higinio O Ochoa III after he posted the snap, which included a gloating message to his online victims.He took the picture on his iPhone and posted it on Twitter without realising it contained GPS data pointing directly to his house.

Researching the username “w0rmer”, investigators also found a reference online which included Ochoa’s full name. Ochoa, is an alleged member of CabinCr3w, an offshoot of the hacktivist collective Anonymous. A criminal complaint filed in connection with the case reveals that pictures of a amply proportioned young woman taken in an outer-Melbourne suburb played a key role in the case.

The snap posted by 30-year-old Ochoa shows a girl in a bikini top from the neck down, with a printed message pinned to her skirt reading: “PwNd by w0rmer & CabinCr3w”

This GPS location allowed local police to easily track down the presumed residence of the woman pictured in the photo, believed to be Ochoa's Australian girlfriend, and others like it in a similar vein promoting Anonymous. One of these featured a picture of the same woman alongside a sign stating "Come me bro! @AnonwOrmer #Cabincr3w".

One of the official twitter account of hacker collective Anonymous warned that they will engage cyber attack against the Govt of UK on 4th of April. The tweet said:- "EXPECT a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) every Saturday on the UK Government sites." As expected it happens hacktivist performs massive denial of service attacks multiple U.K. government websites over the country’s “draconian surveillance proposals” and “derogation of civil rights.” At the time of writing, the following websites are down: homeoffice.gov.uk (Home Office), number10.gov.uk (10 Downing Street - British Prime Minister’s Office), and justice.gov.uk (Ministry of Justice). A message on the site said the page was currently unavailable homeoffice.gov.uk "due to a high volume of traffic", suggesting a denial of service attack had been perpetrated. A message on Twitter claiming to be from Anonymous, a loosely organised group of hackers, said the action was "for your draconian surveillance proposals". The apparent attack came after it emerged last week that the Government was planning a massive expansion of its powers to monitor the email exchanges and website visits of every person in the UK. Under legislation expected in next month's Queen's Speech, internet companies will be instructed to install hardware enabling GCHQ - the Government's electronic "listening" agency - to examine "on demand" any phone call made, text message and email sent, and website accessed, in "real time" without a warrant.
A Home Office spokesman said: "We are aware of some reports that the Home Office website may be the subject of an online protest. We have put all potential measures in place and will be monitoring the situation very closely." The Home Office added that if a successful denial of service attempt did occur tonight, it would "liaise with the technical team and update as necessary".
