Android Breathes New Life Into “Made in China”

How do you end up with millions of new sales overnight with low development and implementation costs? In the case of Chinese electronics companies Rock Chips and Box Chips the answer has been simple – hitch a ride on Android.
China’s economy is booming thanks to low cost assembly, the country’s key advantage when competing on the global playing field. Manufacturers deliver low cost laborers who are able to follow processes and procedures to a reasonable degree of accuracy at very reasonable rates, and thus gain an edge over Western manufacturers.
In my years in China I’ve seen technologies come and go, but none have excited these manufacturers like the prospect of Android. It’s a solid, “open” operating system that lets them do a number of interesting things without many risks.
The West in turn has provided the “design” element of the process, enabling the overall product to be reliable and aesthetically pleasing. Chinese companies aren’t yet geared to competing in this arena. In order to undertake the gamble of developing an OS that gave them an exclusively Chinese platform (a la Microsoft or Apple for the US), Chinese firms would need an extensive process of re-education.
Then there’s the problem of IP. While Western competitors have strong rules in place (and real penalties) for infringement of their IP – Chinese companies face a business environment where their development costs would be lost overnight as soon as another company could clone their product. Success, then, often led to copying.
This of course doesn’t mean that Western companies in China get an easy ride. In fact Apple, a strong defender of its IP everywhere, has been unable to prevent clones and copies from flooding the market, all guaranteed to look similar to the original, though never approaching the same quality or usability.
So it becomes clear why Android is so appealing to the Chinese marketplace: it enables companies to move into the usability “design” space that they’ve previously been unable to access. Here you have a strong, internationally accepted operating system, with an open license to be copied (at no cost) and installed and used on any device you like. In fact the OS developer positively encourages you to do so.

It’s a stable platform with the weight of Google behind it and the thousands of talented computer science graduates in the country can play with it, adapt it and improve it – without having to design a system from the ground up. The market entry costs are limited to wages, so there’s a huge incentive for Chinese firms to get involved.
This means that the traditional IC players now face stiff competition from China, with Rock Chips and Box Chips already selling millions and another local firm, Actions, about to enter the fray. These companies can focus on the Android platform and develop newer and faster processors to support the latest hardware and Android updates. As the OS gains further market traction and the Chinese companies find a growing talent pool of skilled engineers to work with it, this competition is going to get stronger.
Niche developers in China will benefit, too. They’ll have local chip sets for reasonable costs, and a versatile workforce to draw on – moving more in the long-term to a quality model, based on customization opportunities and away from a volume pricing model.
Currently there’s still a defined lag from Chinese firms in the commodity technology market, and when Android first launched this lag was a year or more over developed nation equivalents, but today this is down to 3 or 4 months. Soon Chinese companies, playing to their own strengths in the supply chain, will close this gap to make it negligible or even begin to take a leading role.
For Google this is a big win too. The Chinese consumer market is a huge one and the trade-off for using a free Google service is that the user agrees to share data with Google. Of course Google’s ability to aggregate massive amounts of personal data directly relates to the quality of their products and services, but it matters more how they can exploit the information they gain from their use.
China has only 40 million credit card users (based on slightly outdated figures released in 2010) and over 500 million computer users. This means that if the Android system were to appear on just 10% of all devices in the country, Google could conceivably, but probably won’t be able to access, more information on Chinese consumers than the country’s credit agencies! The rub is that the Android these firms are running is not “official” and as such rarely communicates with Google’s servers.
As the price of Android tablets and phones continues to decrease, the percentage of users is likely to grow exponentially.
This model of quality firmware partnered with lower-cost, mid-quality hardware, enables companies like Rock Chips and Box Chips to make millions of unit sales, and to win over not only the traditional “value” customer, but also the more discerning customers, domestically and overseas. It also encourages other IC manufacturers to come to the party and many will soon be joining them in an Android led technology revolution.

SHAKIRA ATTACKED BY A SEA LION

Poor Shakira! A sea lion attacked the Colombian crooner in South Africa this weekend. Don’t worry, though: the ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer is okay. So, what exactly happened?
During Shakira’s vacation in Cape Town this weekend, she and her group wanted to get closer to some seals and sea lions because, well, they’re adorable! However, the animals may not have wanted the company.
Shakira says that she was speaking to the animals in a baby voice, taking photos and trying to pet them when one of the sea lions lunged at her. “Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me,” Shakira posted on her Facebook page. “Everyone there screamed, including me. I was paralyzed by fear and couldn’t move; I just kept eye contact with it while my brother ‘Super Tony’ jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast.”
Yikes! So why did the sea lion attack her? She suspects that it was a bit hungry — and it mistook Shakira’s cellphone for its lunch. “I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the BlackBerry I was taking these pics with,” Shakira explained, “with some sort of fish. It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it.”
Luckily, Shakira’s just fine and even has a sense of humor about the incident. ”It’s funny that only half an hour before I was complaining to my guide Andrew that I never get to see wild animals up close on adventurous trips,” she wrote. “Oh well, I can’t say that anymore!! Now I’m off to see some penguins! I hope they are a bit more friendly!”

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012)

Five years after his last ride, Nicolas Cage's flame-faced vigilante is back in a new heavy-metal fable about a mother (Violante Placido) and child (Fergus Riordan) on the run from the devil (Ciarán Hinds). If captured, the kid will become a superpowered vessel for evil on earth, and nobody — not the wine-guzzling French mercenary played by Idris Elba, and certainly not the accursed biker-cum-demon Johnny Blaze (Cage) — wants that to happen.
Like the first Ghost Rider movie, this one burns plenty of rubber trying to swerve around plot holes and thinly written characters. As a showcase for random acts of bad-assery, the movie has its moments, like when the Ghost Rider pees fire or eats a flurry of bullets and pukes them back in a molten stream. Directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the team behind the raucously entertaining Crank movies, clearly set out to push the series — and its star — to new heights of biker-gang lunacy. But most of the movie's action-horror set pieces play like lame Gwar music video outtakes, and Cage's signature mix of irony and off-the-rails mugging only works when you can see the actor's face. In Ghost Rider form, his character is just a skeletal automaton with neither a tongue nor a cheek to put it in. D+

New 'Max Payne 3' trailer. Plus: Exclusive image!

Max Payne 3 has been just over the horizon for a long time now — ever since new images first emerged of the gun-toting badass, looking much older, balder, and tank-toppier. But the hotly-anticipated shooter has finally nailed down a May 15 release date, and now comes a brand-new trailer which shines some light on the story. (Literally — in stark contrast to the perpetual-midnight urban hell of the first two games, Max Payne 3 is set in sunny São Paulo.) Check out the trailer below, and be sure to click on the exclusive image above for a larger portrait of the official Max Payne breakfast. Hey, always five o’clock somewhere.

I love how the whole trailer is set to a Giorgio Moroder-esque synth track — or maybe, post-Drive, it’s more accurate to call it Cliff Martinez-esque. Fellow gamers, what do you think of the trailer?

'Supernatural' react: Lucifer returns -- but for once, Sam's not the craziest of them all

I imagine if given any choice, Sam would happily tango with evil clowns instead of Lucifer and his mind games. Unfortunately, Sammy was given no such opportunity, and this week found himself once again grappling with his visions of His Evilness (Mark Pellegrino) as the brothers worked a pretty twisted case.
In seven seasons, there have been less than a handful of times when the Winchesters have worked a case that turned out to have a troubling human element. The first such instance was in “The Benders” from season one, when the cause of a string of missing people turned out to have nothing to do with lore and everything to do with a crazy family of hillbillies. (Why’s it always the hillbillies?)
This week’s episode took a page from that approach, with a case involving a young man Dean and Sam had met four years ago. (Is someone keeping track of the “blasts from the past” we’re meeting this season?) This boy had been possessed by a demon who Dean and Sam needed to squeeze for info on Lilith and the whereabouts of her lieutenants. (Yup, it was that far back. Supernatural better thank their lucky stars their headliners have aged well, enabling them to utilize this storytelling device.) So in order to get the information they needed, Dean and Sam had to torture the poor kid and then sent the demon back to hell after they got what they needed. Four years later, mysterious murders began happening that led the boys to believe the demon was back in action. Not so, it turned out.
Actually, the boy they saved had started murdering women. To be fair, his eggs were totally scrambled after his demon encounter all those years ago, but sorry, bud, that’s no excuse for going on a murder spree. I mean, look at Sam, he’s plagued by the devil himself and manages to keep a pure heart. (I wonder, if psycho boy had a Dean-like figure in his life, could he have resisted the dark force that consumed him? Hmm.)
Could it be?! Yet another incredibly strong episode? Why, yes! How spoiled I feel! I mean, not to sound gushy. One can always find nit-picks, but I just don’t see a point in dwelling in the minor things when the episode was so enjoyable.
I really hope you all feel the same way I do about these last two episodes. Because I think overwhelmingly positive response might send the most important message of all: After seven years, fans haven’t tired of the things that made Supernatural great in the first place. There’s still steam left in this engine. Oh, and keep Mark Pellegrino on the payroll.
I’m eager for your thoughts, readers. What did you think of the episode? Did you like the human twist? Did you feel bad for the puppy!? Were you totally freaked out by the library head-bashing scene/Lucifer’s disgusting tongue? And are you dying because the wait for the next new episode is so long? (March 9, see you soon. Misha Collins, see you in my dreams until then.)

Print your Single Photo into Multiple Pages

Printing your single pic into multiple pages is sometimes good and especially when you want to beautify your house or put up some image of your child on the wall, then rather than putting up one small image, you can put one big image formed using small images.
While printing one image into many pages is possible, it is not that easy as it is with this utility called Print It. Print It is an image printing utility that can print your images into multiple pages in very simple steps. Moreover you get to see the grid lines which will show how your image will be divided into parts on the pages.
How to Use:
• Just load your image in the tool by selecting the Load button.
• Select your Print mode (Image Size prints the image in multiple pages, Fit to page option will fit the image into single sheet, Stretch to page option will fill the page with one image, Pixel to pixel option prints the image in printer resolution).
• You can select to either disable or enable the grid lines (which would not be printed either ways).
• In case you don’t have a printer as of now, select the Save Parts button to save the split images as soft copy and print them later.
The tool is free to use and is supported on all Windows versions. Isn’t it a good idea to impress your girl by putting up a big image of her on your wall printed using Print It? :)
