2012 Linux Computer Buyer’s Guide

With the coming of a new year, it is time to take a look at the Linux

computer offerings and see which distributions you can get shipped t

o your doorstep. I just recently ordered a new desktop from one

of these vendors, and I will publish a review as soon as I have thoroughly

tested it.

System76 – It has become a landmark on the Linux desktop and laptop landscape. Now in its 7th year o

f selling Ubuntu-based machines, System76 offers a variety of customizable laptops, desktops, and serv

ers, all with the latest version of Ubuntu installed. From the $649 Lemur Ultra 14.1” laptop to the $2,099 Ja

ckal Pro 2U rack-mountable server, System76 has something for just about anyone.

ZaReason – This company with the strange name has been building Linux computers since

2007 and has an extensive line of laptops, desktops, and servers. It has everything from low-end

boxes for as little as $399 to high-end servers priced at $2,499. ZaReason offers a wide r

ange of customization options, low prices, free shipping, and a choice of operating systems,

including several versions of Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Linux Mint, and the option to get a machine with no OS.

EmperorLinux – The grandfather of them all, EmperorLinux has been selling high-end Linux laptops

since 1999. Do not expect to find cheep netbooks on this vendor’s site. You can, however, get the

$4,900 rugged Caiman E6400 XFR with your choice of Fedora, Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux,

CentOS, Debian, SUSE, or Slackware. EmperorLinux has nothing under $1,000, but for the price, the

systems come with guaranteed full hardware support using a custom kernel.

ThinkPenguin – If price is a concern of yours, ThinkPenguin may be a good spot to start your

search. They offer laptops as low as $499 and desktops as low as $249, before customizations.

Without a doubt, you will want to make at least a few tweaks, and this site gives you that flexibility. It also provides

a form for you to fill in the distribution you want installed, which presumably means they will install

any distro you want. The default option is Trisquel GNU/Linux.

Ohava – Perhaps one of the newest on the block, Ohava offers 3 mini-ITX form factor desktops starting a

t $299, three notebooks starting at $375.99, and three servers starting at $944.99. The compan

y also offers other services, such as an open cloud solution, web services, and training. Like the others on the li

st, they offer customization options and the option to install Ubuntu, Fedora, or SUSE.

eRacks – Another vendor that has been around since 1999, eRacks offers quite a few desktop,

server, and laptop options with Linux installed. Its website gives you full customization over just abo

ut everything from motherboards to extra software. eRacks will install a number of Linux di

stributions, such as Ubuntu, CentOS, and Gentoo, several BSD variants, and even Windows. It offers laptops starting at $879 and desktops starting at $395.

Freedom and Choice

By purchasing a computer with Linux installed, you can save money, but you can also help support the free

and open source software movement. When you buy a computer with Windows, it gets counted as

a Windows PC sale, even if you remove Windows and install Linux later. When you buy Linux, you

support Linux. Moreover, many of the problems Linux users have stem from incompatibility with hardware that

was meant for Windows.

When you buy a computer with Linux installed, your vendor has made every effort to ensure

compatibility. You will also have a warranty and support from a company that knows Linux. With

affordable prices and freedom, you have nothing to lose.

Michael Jackson's 'Immortal' Soundtrack: 5 Best Remixes

Just as The Beatles' "Love" and the "Viva Elvis" Cirque du Soleil soundtracks transformed classic material into a new listening experience for fans, Michael Jackson's "Immortal" album -- the soundtrack for his "The Immortal World Tour" Cirque production -- aims to do the same. Not that Jackson's hits need the help, which is perhaps why less is changed than more.

Whereas the Beatles' Grammy-winning "Love" was more liberal in its mash-ups and bold transitions, "Immortal" remains more protective of Jackson's original vision. In some cases -- like "Planet Earth/Earth Song" -- "Immortal" incorporates Jackson's spoken word poetry, seemingly in an approach to cut to the heart of the deceased legend's true -- and oft-scrutinized -- character.

New Cirque Show Is Michael Jackson's Music 'On Steroids'

"I want to make sure that the fans, his family and everyone that was close to him know this is a Michael Jackson record," producer Kevin Antunes told Billboard of "Immortal" last month. Antunes remixes, mashes up and in a few rare cases, completely re-imagines Jackson 5 and solo hits, using only a small amount of unheard Jackson takes. It's a compilation that is sure to excite big fans for the mere idea that it introduces a new way to interact with material that's been poured over, and in some cases, canonized. However, the slight alterations that are made are likely to be lost of those who are not already extensively familiar with Jackson's massive catalogue, not just his hits.

So what exactly is new on "Immortal"? Here are five re-imagined tracks worth paying attention to on "Immortal," released today (Nov. 21) on Epic Records.

1. In one of the album's less club-ready moments, the Jackson 5's 1970 classic "I'll Be There" is stripped down to a solemn piano-only ballad, allowing young Michael's voice to shine even more than it did on the original. While the mashup of Jackson 5's gives light to an altered "ABC," "I'll Be There" is the finest Jackson 5 moment on "Immortal."

2. "They Don't Care About Us," from 1996's HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, is perhaps one of Jackson's most misunderstood songs, with antisemitic controversy surrounding the track. The public controversy remains, but vocally, Jackson's "woo-hoos" and aggressive, military-tinged beats are matched by a stunning choir.

3. The posthumous album's lead "single," "Immortal Megamix," is full of bombast and dance club glory, mashing up "Can You Feel It," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," and "Black Or White." Although it starts off with scratching and drum rolls that feel like an odd fit for Jackson classics through the years, the 9-minute "Megamix" is, without a doubt, the most altered listening experience on the record -- and sure to get you moving. Finally, the genius of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is not overshadowed.

4. Some may think of this brief "Thriller" version as the haunted house remix, with its chain-rattling, thunder-filled intro. What the stripped-down track does is fully channel the classic video's vision as it starts, but keeps what may be Jackson's most classic song intact. Naturally, the Vincent Price narration stands -- what good would a hour remix of "Thriller" be without it?

5. On "Dancing Machine"/"Blame It On the Boogie," two of the Jackson 5/Jacksons' most underrated dance tracks get the mash-up treatment in addition to an update past the disco era. Industrial drums and sound effects have been added in an attempt to mimic production elements Jackson utitlized in his later material. The remix shines not because it mashes up two of MJ's two biggest hits, but because it escalates the songs' dance-inspiring grooves.

Gimp 2.6.4 Released

Introducing another sophisticated paint and photo-editing program – GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) – the next version 2.6.4 has just been released. There are several bug fixes over the previous version.

Gimp shares several similarities with Adobe Photoshop, but the most apparent differences between the two is that the latter is a paid version, whilst the former is made available publicly as an open-source program.

In saying so, it simply means that what you can do in Photoshop are likely to be the things that you can do with GIMP, including complicated image filtering, lighting effects, etc.
