Well this is a far cry from the usual Labrinth fare, isn’t it? You can see why they’re releasing it – there’s few names hotter than Emeli Sande in UK music right now following her mass exposure during the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. And of course, Emeli’s part lies as the heart of Beneath Your Beautiful; her vocals are gorgeous, the delivery poised perfectly. But for us, the song is so much more than just that – it’s perhaps here, more than anywhere else, that we get a real sense of Labrinth, the performer and songwriter, stripped bare.
Two and half minutes in, as Emeli delivers a few tender ad-libs over a gorgeous, swaying string arrangement – our heart literally melted in our chest. To think that a record so sweet, so starkly emotional, could come from the same bloke who delivered club smash Earthquake is remarkable. But then, that’s the brilliance of Labrinth as a contemporary pop talent – the versatility. And as a showcase for both him and Emeli, Beneath Your Beautiful stands as one of the best moments either of them has ever put to record. A stunning duet from two of the year’s brightest stars.
